Lafayette Park in Detriot

I have special relationship to Mies van der Rohe as I grew up with his designs. Above is a shot of Lafayette Park taken from across the Detroit River in Windsor, Canada.

Below are townhouses that he designed as part of an urban renewal project in Detroit’s Lafayette Park (1961-1965). We lived there until I was 10 when we moved to the East Tower also in Lafayette Park. Now considered a historic landmark it was a beautiful representation of the International Miesien style. It was an almost idyllic place to grow up not only progressive in its architecture. It was a wonderful mix of culture and backgrounds that had a Sesame Street “we are one” kind of vibe. I had forgotten how pretty it was until I pulled up these pictures.
